Helpful tips to keep you safe on these cold days

2/5/2021 (Permalink)

When doing winter storm damage repair or even inspections there are a few things to do.

  • Wear two layers of clothing. Our guys are trained to wear more clothing for better insulation out in the colder temperatures of the great northern Wisconsin winters. There first layer should be a thick insulation layer and the second should be a waterproof layer. Waterproof is because getting wet from the rain or snow can cause your body temp to drop and cause hyperthermia.
  • Wear slip- resistant boots while checking roof tops. Its very common for snow to build-up on rooftops in the winter. It is also very important to clean them off. Heat from inside your home can cause the snow to melt and then refreezing causing ice to form, that is why is very important to wear slip- resistant boots.
  • Account for temperature correction when testing for moisture. Moisture meters are a critical tool for building restoration, helping our technicians pinpoint moisture intrusion sources so they can properly be remediated. Pin-type meters are very popular because they work in a verity of building materials.
  • Bring spare moisture meter electrodes. Meter electrodes can be very brittle especially when working outside in freezing temperatures.
  • Check meter calibrations before each shift. It is very important to calibrate everyday to insure you are getting the correct reading. A correct reading helps make sure the job is done correctly.

1/22/2021 (Permalink)

As we sit here up in the great northwestern part of Wisconsin, we kind of tend to forget that not all storms are the same. Generator precautions

1/22/2021 (Permalink)

During a storm where there is a power outage, generators come in very handy. When using a generator you need to take many precautions. We at SERVPRO would like to give you a few very helpful tips on safely operating a generator.

  • Positon generator outside and away from any structure. Running a generator inside can cause fatal levels of carbon monoxide. Keep generators at least 15 feet away from your home/business to prevent exhaust from entering.
  • Disconnect to the power source coming into your home/business. Power from the generator could be sent back into the utility line causing hazardous conditions for utility workers.
  • Make sure your generator is properly grounded. Grounding your generator helps prevent shocks and electrocutions. Refer to the OSHA guidelines for grounding requirements.
  • Plug equipment directly into the generator. Use a heavy-duty, outdoor extension cord, which has a wire gauge that can handle the electric load of any connected appliances.
  • DO NOT plug generators into a wall outlet. Never try to power a generator from a wall outlet or main electrical panel. Only a licensed electrician should connect a generator to the main panel by installing the proper equipment according to the electrical codes.
  • Make sure you have enough fuel to run your generator. Always turn off and let the generator before refueling. Inspect and maintain your generator regularly.

Roof damage can be prevented

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

While most of us think the snow is beautiful to look at through a window, the below freezing temps and heavy snow can be devastating to your home or business. We at SERVPRO have some suggestions of what to do and not to do for your home or business this winter.

  • Preventing a roof collapse

Get yourself a roof rake, it can save your roof from ending up inside your home or business. Most roofs can handle about 20 pounds of snow per square foot before becoming weak. You want to do what you safely can to keep your roof as clean as possible, that is where a roof rake comes in handy. You can reach most of your roof safely from the ground or not to far off the ground.

  • Check your gutters

Clean any debris out such as twigs and leaves. The gutter and down spout clear at all times for any melting snow to be able to run away from the building. If they are blocked in any way, it can cause a devastating ice damn.

  • Insulate your attic or roof line

Ice damns happen when heat escapes from your roof, melting the snow and freezes around the water. Leaking roof can damage walls and ceilings which than in turn can cause a mold issue. So, make sure your roof is in good working order and you have plenty of insulation in the attic. Do not keep the attic anymore than 5 to 10 degrees warmer than your home.

If you have any questions regarding roof damage or ice damns feel free to give us a call 24/7

Is your septic system ready for the harsh winter?

12/31/2020 (Permalink)

Lack of snow cover and dropping temperatures can spell trouble for homeowners with septic systems. Snow helps to insulate septic systems and keep them from freezing.
• Place a layer of mulch 8 to 12 inches thick over the pipes, tank, and soil treatment system to provide extra insulation. This can be straw, leaves, hay, or other loose material that will stay in place and not become compacted. This is particularly important for new systems that were installed so late in the year that vegetative cover didn't get established. If the system is currently frozen, don’t add mulch now; it will delay thawing in the spring.
• Use water—the warmer the better—if you’re worried your system is starting to freeze. Spread out your laundry schedule so you run one warm/hot load a day. Use the dishwasher and take hot baths. Do not leave the water running all the time—this will overload the septic system.
• Going away for an extended period? Have someone use warm water in the home regularly or pump out your tank before leaving.
• Fix any leaky plumbing fixtures or appliances in your home. This will help prevent freezing problems and help your system perform better all year.
• Keep all vehicle, animal, and people traffic off the system. This is a rule to follow all year as compacted snow and soils cause frost to go down deeper and faster. Pay special attention to the area between the house and tank.
• Keep an eye on your system. If any seeping or ponding occurs, contact an onsite professional to help determine the cause and remedy.
• Add more insulation to your system. This could include replacing the pipe with an insulated pipe, adding expanded foam panels over septic tanks, or adding more soil cover.
A septic system that is frozen can then back up into your home and cause a huge amount of damage! If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call 24/7. 715-634-0699

Are you ready for the cold?

12/9/2020 (Permalink)

Well 2020 has been quite the year to say the least!!! The most unpredictable year we at SERVPRO have every seen. From the craziness of the world trying to shut down on us from the pandemic, to it being almost the middle of December and being 45 degrees and zero snow on the ground. We all know eventually the ugly white stuff will show its nasty self. With that being said, we can always take a few precautionary measures to protect our home and business from old man winter’s sometimes unforgiving face.

  • Make sure you change your furnace filter and get your air ducts cleaned at least once a year
  • Make sure your gutters are free of leaves and debris
  • Seal up all your windows and unused exterior doors
  • Clean your chimney and have enough firewood prepared for the entire winter
  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Shut down pool and sprinkler systems and drain outside faucets

Waters on the rise after the snow

4/14/2020 (Permalink)

As I write this in Northern Wisconsin we were just pounded with 6 inches of snow over Easter and more this morning, so it’s hard to think about spring storms.  But heavy rain and snow are common during the spring months and all that water leads to cold fast moving dangerous rivers and standing waters. Never attempt to cross a flooded road on foot or by vehicle.  Remember the water in these areas can remain dangerously cold even when the air temperatures are hot.

Please keep in mind also these waters can enter your home or business and when this happens SERVPRO of Hayward will be there to serve you as we have the proper equipment for water mitigation and drying.  Give us a call at 715-634-0699 for all your water restoration needs.

How to prevent Ice Damns in the Hayward Area

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

Ice dams can be a major problem during the winter season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice.  When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof ’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas. Your local SERVPRO® of Hayward can help mitigate water damage caused by ice dams and help you get your structure back to preloss condition. If you find yourself in such a problem give us a call at 715-634-0699, we are available for emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Our team is a professional group that will get your house to "Like it never even happened."  We are certified and will always make sure work is completed to your satisfaction.

Fall Cleanup

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Fall can be a beautiful time of year, but can also lead to a lot of work for homeowners.  The simple picking up of leaves can be a daunting task when they never stop falling.  Here are a few tips to get your home and property ready for the upcoming cool air and soon to be winter weather.  If an emergency does arise SERVPRO of Hayward is here to help.

Need Emergency Service? Call Us 24/7 – 715-634-0699

  • Clean gutters and downspouts. Once most of the leaves have fallen, clean out gutters and downspouts (hire a helper if you are not comfortable on a ladder). Clogged gutters during rainstorms can cause water to pool and damage your roof or siding.
  • Make exterior repairs. Take a walk around your property, looking for signs of damage to the roof, siding and foundation. If you spot anything that needs repair, schedule it before winter weather hits.
  • Seal gaps where critters could enter. Mice need only a tiny gap to be able to sneak into your house and raid your pantry — and with colder weather coming, all of the little critters out there will be looking for warm places to make a home. Fill small holes and cover any larger gaps securely with heavy-duty hardware cloth to keep the wildlife outdoors.

By doing these simple maintenance tips you can possible prevent water damage, or fire to your home.  SERVPRO of Hayward specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire, smoke or water damage event. Our staff is highly trained in property damage restoration. From initial and ongoing training at SERVPRO’s corporate training facility to regular IICRC-industry certification, rest assured our staff is equipped with the knowledge to restore your property.

Temperatures Dropping Cause Frozen Pipes

1/11/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Hayward we are experts in water damage and cleanup.  We are here when these winter storms fire up and temperatures cool way down if you experience frozen pipes that burst.  Give us a call at (715)634-0699 if you are in need water cleanup when the storms hit.

In the meantime please follow some of these tips to avoid the frozen pipes:

  • Let a faucet drip that has a supply pipe running along an outside wall. You do not need a strong flow, just enough to keep the water flowing. Flowing water freezes slower than standing water in a pipe.
  • Do not turn your heat down during windy cold days. The cooling down period allows the cold to penetrate walls before it comes into your house. The pipes are exposed to this cold air. Hot water heat is more prone to freezing due to the hot water in the heating lines. Hot water will freeze faster than cold or room temperature water.
  • Leave cabinet doors under sinks that face outside walls open. These areas are not generally heated but do receive the cold air coming in through walls. This will help prevent froze water supply and waste piping.
  • Insulate walls where piping runs. Opening walls and checking is not always practical. However checking for insulation when walls are open for repairs or remodeling is a great idea.
  • Keep garage doors closed when not going in or out. The cold air will freeze pipes exposed to garage walls. These walls are not always insulated as well as outside walls.
  • Shut off water to outside faucets. Leaking outside faucets and piping to them are caused by freezing over the winter. We replace many outside faucets and piping in the spring due to freezing.
  • Have a neighbor, relative or friend check on your house when you go out of town. Total house freeze ups that require major repair result from homes that the heat goes out and the house gets down below 32 degrees. All the plumbing freezes including toilets, faucets etc. This could amount to costs well over $10,000.00.

SERVPRO Teams were out for Hurricane Irma cleanup

10/11/2017 (Permalink)

Chris Nelson, Mike Hartung, Andrew Mathews, and Jake Erickson all of SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn, and Rusk Counties heading to Florida

Our SERVPRO Production Manager Chris Nelson of SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn, and Rusk Counties headed out to Florida for Hurricane Irma cleanup and restoration.  Chris, along with his Fire and Water Damage Technicians, Mike Hartung, Andrew Mathews, and Jake Erickson all of SERVPRO of Barron, Dunn, and Rusk Counties all put in an  excellent communication process, and professional service to the below customer.  The customer left an awesome message(below) for our franchise owner Andrea Hanestad which also owns SERVPRO of Hayward location.

Dear Andrea,

I completed the customer survey, but I also wanted to follow up with a personal email.

We had waited almost a week to get a return call from another restoration company.  When I called SERVPRO, I received a call back the next day.  It was worth waiting for Chris and his crew to drive to Florida.

Mike, Jake, and Andy were the BEST.  Professionally dressed, polite and experts in their field.  The removal of flood damaged drywall, cabinets, and appliances were done in a "surgical" manner.  When they came back and removed the contents from the yard, it looked like nothing had been placed there.

For the most part, we are not use to this level of quality work by some of our contracted providers.  Chris was an excellent communicator and kept me up to date what was going to happen and when they would be returning for their equipment.  Any time that was given, the "guys" arrived at the given time.

Thank you for sending your crew to Florida to help us when we needed it the most.  If you would also thank their families who made the sacrifice of being without a husband, father or son.

Bless You,

Susan A.
